Breaking Fashion Boundaries: Women’s Attitudes and Styles in the 1960s

Women’s fashion underwent significant changes throughout the 1960s, becoming increasingly casual for people of all ages and genders. Three main trends dominated women’s wear during this era: the continuation of refined elegance from the previous decade, youthful styles popularized by Mary Quant and the Space Age movement, and the hippie style that emerged in the late 60s.

Jackie Kennedy, with her tailored suit dresses and pristine white pearls, set the fashion standard at the start of the decade. However, midway through the era, supermodel Twiggy encouraged women to embrace simplicity and freedom in their clothing choices. These vintage photos, discovered by Steven Martin, offer a glimpse into the distinctive fashion styles of young women during the 1960s.
