Stephen Biesty’s Incredible Cross-Sections of Everything
In his works, the artist Stephen Biesty deconstructs complex objects – bridges, ships, buildings, cars, and the human body. He “cuts” objects into layers and parts, showing their internal structure.

Biesty was inspired by the drawings of L. Ashwell Wood, in which Wood also depicted objects in section.
Biesty calls his illustrations “atmospheric cross-sections.” But he doesn’t just show static cuts – he tells stories through them. Within the object, there are hundreds of characters walking through medieval England or aboard a Spanish galleon.
In the case of the book “Medieval Castle,” for example, Biesty drew a spy who begins his journey on the title page, outside the castle, then makes his way into the castle, which he finally leaves on the last page.
Stephen Biesty rose to fame in the early 1990s when he produced the Miraculous Sections series, which sold 3.5 million copies.
