It was 2014 when New Yorker Donato Di Camillo could finally roam the city he knew and loved, camera in tow, documenting the unfamiliar faces and eccentric individuals that passed him by. This pastime, however, had long been kept from him. Di Camillo first became interested in photography eight years prior, while serving time in prison for a federal crime. Locked behind bars, Di Camillo obsessively pored over the glossy pages of National Geographic, Time, and Smithsonian magazines, enchanted by the images of the outside world beyond his reach. That is why shadows have always been of interest to visual artists – painters and photographers. Many of them choose to illustrate shadows instead of real objects, producing very interesting, conceptual, and artistic works. Today we offer a showcase of shadow photography. People, actually, are often too busy to notice how different and interesting shadow effects can be. “The brave and wise Khalkhas live along the mountains in the south of Xinjiang and are companions with the eagles. They regard eagles as their children and train them for many years to hunt. This 70 year old man is rigid and solemn in front of family and friends, but when he is with his beloved eagle, the corner of his mouth would curve up. When the eagles reach mating age, although he is very reluctant, the man releases the eagles back into nature so that they can thrive. In 1914, Baby Animal Photography Made For Exhausting Work

From the early 1900s to 1950s, Harry Whittier Frees enjoyed a modicum of fame for his delightfully costumed and posed photographs of baby animals. Though he began photographing cute animals in 1902, he did not begin dressing them in tiny human costumes until 1905. As the story goes, his family was passing a paper hat around the table at a birthday party, and someone placed it on a cat’s head. Frees snapped a photo of the feline, and took it to a postcard maker, who demanded more. Continue reading »
