Then-and-Now Photos of Abandoned Detroit School

To “raise awareness of the social and economic challenges the city of Detroit,” the folks at Detroiturbex decided to tell the story about an abandoned Lewis Cass Technical High School with the help of superimposed then-and-now photos. First, they photographed every room the old Detroit school, which was abandoned after a 2007 fire. Then they put the pictures of the buzzing life from the past on top of them.

These sad pictures are a mirror of today’s Detroit. The city has suffered tremendous population increases and then rapid declines. Today, Detroit is designed for 2 million people, however, less than 1/3 or ~ 700 thousands have remained in the city. The infrastructure, built at the time of the population boom, stands abandoned, run down and an easy target for arsonists.

The city is in need of the change, and such projects definitely bring it one step closer. Continue reading »

Impossible Instant Lab: Turn iPhone Images into Real Photos

Transform your digital iPhone images into real instant photographs that you can touch, caress and share with friends!

The Impossible Instant Lab is designed to transform any digital image via your iPhone into an instant photo that is exposed using only the light from the display, then processed and developed by chemicals. A photo that exists physically – IRL. A photo that is a one-of-a-kind original that can be shared, exhibited and preserved. A photo that no longer needs an electronic device to be seen.

Just select an image from the Instant Lab app, place the iPhone in the cradle and slide open the shutter on the base. A signal tells you when the exposure is finished. Close the shutter, push the button and the Instant Lab ejects your photo, ready to develop in the palm of your hand. That’s it! Continue reading »

‘Stacked’ Space Station Photos Highlight Star Trails

A scientist aboard the International Space Station took extraordinary photos of the starscape from aboard the vessel, using a special technique that highlights their movement. Expedition 31 Flight Engineer Don Pettit used long exposures in conjunction with digital editing to achieve the star-trail effect. Given that some of the shots required nearly 15 minutes of exposure, Pettit needed the software to overcome the limitations of his camera. Continue reading »

One57 Gets Glassy: Photos Of Midtown’s Newest Supertall Skyscraper

Midtown Manhattan’s much-awaited 1,004-foot One57 residential tower hasn’t topped out yet, but the first dozen or so floors have already gotten their glass façade (although some of the blue panels appear to still have their protective pastic coating). The Christian de Portzamparc-designed skyscraper, across from Carnegie Hall on 57th Street, will tower over the south end of Central Park, and will be the first major addition to the park’s skyline since Robert A.M. Stern’s 15 Central Park West, a limestone-clad throwback to the pre-war era, was completed in 2008. Extell Development is hoping One57’s six-bedroom penthouse will fetch $110 million, which would make it the most expensive single residence ever sold in New York.

The following are photos taken at a few different times at the end of March and beginning of April by Flickr user 600west218, who has allowed us to use his shots. Continue reading »

Ubi-Camera Let’s You Take Photos With Your Hands

Researchers at the Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences are working on a device that allows you to take pictures using your hands. The small camera is attached to your thumb and let’s you frame shots using your fingers in the shape of a rectangle.

“When you draw a picture or take a photo, you sometimes form a rectangle with your hands to decide the composition. With this camera, you can take a photo using the exact same motion. You attach this device to your index finger, and form a rectangle with your finger like this. You take the photo by using the rectangle as the viewfinder, like this. When you push hard with your thumb, the shutter is pressed.”

Camera users fit the tiny square camera unit over a finger, then ‘frame’ shots using their fingers. Continue reading »

Planet Mercury Unmasked: Fantastic Photos Of Crazy New Discoveries

There are competing theories about Mercury’s formation. Physical models pictured here invoke one or more giant impacts (left) or the vaporization of surface by a hot solar nebula to remove the planet’s original crust and outer mantle. These are rare photographs from the early 1900s depicting captured moments of Christmas in New York City; pictures of a long forgotten era.

Best Photos of Mountain Summit Contest 2011

Mountains are made of rock. They don’t usually move. But they do generate plenty of motion: they allow for streams to carve their way through their slopes. They create habitats for animals and plants. And they are shaped by wind and weather. For us humans, they are a recreational destination, a playground and in a way, a “gym”. Everything in them that moves or is moved is part of “Mountain.Moves”.

In cooperation with partners of eight countries and the support of the IMS, KIKU wants to acknowledge creativity and the powers of observation of all mountain lovers. The best photos will be rewarded with a special prize and the photographers invited to the award ceremony at the IMS. A selection of pictures will be exposed in the city center of Brixen/Bressanone, Italy. Continue reading »
