Architect Roberto Giacomucci Treats Every Material as a Living Substance With Its Own Inner Nature
Roberto Giacomucci is an Italian architect and designer from Ancona.
Giacomucci built his professional career as an architect and industrial designer, founding Studio Giacomucci Design in 1994. He has collaborated with major galleries and design houses including Rossana Orlandi in Milan, Fragile Milano, Mint London, Matter of Stuff London, Bontempi, and TOOY, creating limited-edition furniture and lighting pieces such as the Bilancella and Quadrante lamp collections for TOOY, which translate light into precise geometric gestures. He has also taught for years at the University of Architecture and Design in Ascoli and holds a philosophy that design should be “estroso, ironico, ma concreto” — inventive and witty, but never impractically visionary.
Beyond commercial design, Giacomucci has developed a distinct contemporary art practice under his own name, exploring what he calls “Dynamic Forces” and “Hypernature” — works that sit at a metaphysical crossroads between volume and material. His paintings frame chemical reactions and spontaneous, random-effect patterns, treating matter almost like a “cellular lexicon” bridging the microscopic and the cosmic. His sculptures extend this chromatic chemistry into three dimensions, balancing pure color against gravitational force — work he frames as a dialogue between “pictorial explosion and sculptural implosion,” tied philosophically to Leopardi’s meditations on infinity and finiteness. One notable piece, “Forces,” embodies this directly: Giacomucci depicts himself as a black arrow, the central actor whose physical force triggers the material’s transformation.
