Artist Kilian Eng Turns Architecture Into Poetry in His Richly Detailed Retro-Futurist Illustrations

Kilian Eng is a Swedish graphics artist based in Stockholm, born in 1982. He’s widely regarded as the natural heir to Moebius’s throne of retro-futurist sci-fi illustration.

Eng graduated from Konstfack, Stockholm’s University of Arts, Craft & Design, in 2010 with a bachelor’s and master’s in Graphic Design and Illustration, and began his commercial career doing record covers for electronic music acts. His signature style blends rich, saturated color with a surrealist sci-fi sensibility, emphasizing environments, architecture, and geometry over characters — mirrored palaces at twilight, infinite skylines, and tropical planets covered in alien forests. Critics consistently note his work is “simultaneously dreamlike and rooted in physical realism,” drawing on influences like Syd Mead, Moebius, Maxfield Parrish, and François Schuiten.
