Malaysian Artist Blurs the Line Between Architecture, Sculpture, and Light to Ask What It Means for an Object to Be Real

Kaiyi Wong is a Malaysian architectural designer, spatial artist, and founder of Unreality Studio. His practice operates at the intersection of architecture, physical sculpture, ambient light installations, digital design, and cultural heritage, continually questioning the threshold between the virtual and the real.

A recurring signature in Wong’s portfolio is the reinterpretation of traditional cultural artifacts through strict architectural and structural principles. Projects such as his contemporary reimagining of Chinese lanterns or his design venture MYJONG (a modern architectural rethinking of traditional Mahjong) show how cultural memory can be updated through new materials, geometric precision, and modern fabrication.

By pairing familiar cultural forms with modern industrial finishes and precise fabrication tolerances, his work investigates what it means to preserve living tradition in a screen-saturated world.
