Fred Herzog was born in Germany in 1930. Immigrating to Canada in 1952, he took odd jobs wherever he could find them. He rented a place at a rooming house, which is where he met Ferro Shelley Marincowitz, a South African who also happened to be a medical photographer. Herzog had an interest in photography; his camera was one of the few items he brought with him from Germany. Marincowitz encouraged that interest and soon they found a basement suite where they built a darkroom for both of them to share. Continue reading »

Spanish cartoonist Joan Cornellà combines black humor and extreme discomfort, most famously in his wordless, six-panel comics. Cornellà‘s work deals in mutilation and disfigurement, sadistic or oblivious violence, the alienation of modernity and a total disregard for human life. (I know. It doesn’t sound funny, but trust me.) Extremely Detailed Illustration Created With 7 Million Ink Dots!
Xavier Casalta, the France-based artist has made career out of creating highly-detailed illustrations of everything from food to calligraphic letters. Casalta’s latest piece, called Autumn, is a throwback to the bygone/upcoming season. Using a technique called stippling, the artist places several ink dots in various patterns to create lines, and textures until an exquisite illustration is formed. This house in Toronto, Canada was built 72 years ago. Recently, the owner — an ordinary 96-year-old woman, a seamstress and knitter by trade — decided to sell it. Amazing Street Art By HoodGraff
Snoop Dogg has released T-shirts and accessories featuring Belarusian embroidery patterns and professing the U.S. rapper’s “love” for Belarus. The items were designed by HoodGraff, a group of street artists from the Belarusian city of Vitebsk. The artists chose to relocate to Russia earlier this year after being fined $1,700, a substantial sum in Belarus. Their offense: attempting to paint a mural of the late, internationally acclaimed Belarusian writer Vasil Bykov, a vocal critic of Lukashenka, during a street-art festival in Minsk.
