“The Way We Fall”: Eerie Illustrations Of An Apocalyptical World By Yuri Shwedoff
Whether we imagine the world as a futuristic dystopia or a charred wasteland, post-apocalyptic images weigh heavily on our cultural imaginations. In a stunning series of illustrations, Russian artist Yuri Shwedoff has created an intensely atmospheric vision of the “end of days,” one that blends fantasy imagery with science fiction. Among his scenes are sword-wielding warriors, blasted roads, alien architecture, and falling skies; as vestiges of the lost world, animals seem to take on a symbolic significance, communing with the human figures in moments of intensity and reflection. Pulled between oscillating states of violent destruction and quiet despair, Shwedoff’s images are bound together by a powerful atmosphere that emanates from the brooding, ash-filled skies. Maroesjka Lavigne, Belgium. Shortlist, Professional, Landscape. A country named after a desert. One of the least densely populated places on earth. Defined by its rich variety of colors yet in a forever changing, yet completely barren landscape. Namibia’s landscape draws you in, through a vast brown plain of scorched earth, and steers you over the white surface of a salt pan to finally arrive in the gold tones of the sand dunes. Patience is required to discover the wide range of Namibia’s subtle scenery. It literally takes you hours, driving though nothing, to at long last arrive at…more of nothing. Continue reading »

What World’s Famous Landmarks Could Look Like In An Epic Drought
A graphic designer has produced a haunting look at what the world’s most famous landmarks would look like if they were hit by a severe drought. Joel Krebs has intricately dried up hot spots such as the Tower Bridge in London, the Capitol in Washington, D.C., Niagara Falls and Machu Picchu. The designer’s works are enough to make viewers feel thirsty – they feature cracked surfaces, roll upon roll of sand, and vultures searching for carcasses in the dry heat. Joel, from Salem, Ore., revealed the idea behind the series came to him when he entered a design contest to remove famous landmarks from their surroundings, as if they’d disappeared. Here: Tower Bridge, London, after severe drought. Continue reading »
