Scarlett Hooft Graafland Creates Surreal Installations Over The Beautiful Landscapes
Working at the intersection of sculpture, performance and photography, Dutch artist Scarlett Hooft Graafland created a series, titled ‘Soft Horizons, Bolivia‘, that explores how sculpture can beautifully intervene in natural landscapes.
Whether it’s a spiral of white balloons floating on a body of orange-colored water or a bunch of hats suspended in smoke, her images possess a wondrous and surreal quality. The objects that Graafland selects to put into the breathtaking landscapes seem to add a mystical aura to it, rather than take away from its beauty.
But incorporating prop and performance into the landscapes was not as simple as it sounded. In an earlier interview, she explains, “You never know beforehand which intervention or performance will work well visually. Sometimes your plan will have to be changed around completely… Many ideas simply emerged on site.”
