25 Year Old British Man Dresses As A 19th Century Regency Gentleman In Bespoke Clothing He Designs

25 year old Zack MacLeod Pinsent of Pinset Tailoring in Brighton, U.K. is a very dapper young man who dresses as if he were a Regency gentleman from the 19th century. Pinset told the BBC that this clothing is far more comfortable for him and builds his confidence more than modern clothing ever did. In fact, he burned his last pair of jeans as a teenager.

More: Instagram h/t: laughingsquid, bbc

He ceremoniously burned his last pair of jeans when he was 14-years-old and hasn’t looked back since.

The overwhelmingly positive response to his distinctive style led him to open a tailoring shop where he makes bespoke 19th-century clothing for both men and women that are “crafted with historical accuracy”

Taken by my dear friend @adpaylor whilst filming with @bigbenmoore for @bbcsouthnews outside my favourite place the Royal Pavilion in Brighton @brighton_museums, I pass it every day on my way to work and my what a view, love to collaborate with them and view the collection at last. The exposure and spread of my message of being yourself has been huge. Still trawling through emails. You also get a great view up my nose in this photo. . #regency #dandy #firstempireproblems #napoleonic #georgian #historicalfashion #tailor #tailored #periodtailoring #gaystagram #mensfashion #tailoring #regencyfashion #smallbusiness #madeinengland #regencydandy #periodtailor #historicalclothing #tailormade #periodfashion #bespoke #tophat #malemodel #historicaltailoring

Using natural Irish #linen hand made in the UK using period #tailoring systems to create this outfit. Taken by my better half in spring in New York. I’ll be advertising my next trunk show soon. All those that have messaged I cannot even begin to express my gratitude for your kind words, but remember, I never would have got this far without the support of my family and friends. Thank you so much and happy Sunday (still not single) . #regency #dandy #firstempireproblems #napoleonic #georgian #historicalfashion #tailor #tailored #periodtailoring #gaystagram #mensfashion #regencyfashion #smallbusiness #madeinengland #regencydandy #periodtailor #historicalclothing #tailormade #periodfashion #bespoke #tophat #malemodel #historicaltailoring

Hottest day of the year so far in the UK, but I’m doing fine staying cool in my layers of #linen and fanning myself, maybe with a drink in hand. This was taken by @americanduchess last year at @janeaustenfestival_ky and I will be back for the ball on the 7th December. I also visit the USA for fittings and consultations and will advertise new dates soon. . Where in the world should I visit next to make things for people? . #regency #dandy #firstempireproblems #napoleonic #georgian #historicalfashion #tailor #tailored #periodtailoring #gaystagram #mensfashion #tailoring #regencyfashion #smallbusiness #madeinengland #regencydandy #periodtailor #historicalclothing #tailormade #periodfashion #bespoke #tophat #malemodel #historicaltailoring

What a whirlwind! Hello to all of you from all across the globe! Your outpouring of love and appreciation is simply astounding. I firmly believe that we should all dress in a way that makes us and the planet happy, it’s 2019, why be constrained? . I’m slowly getting around to answering over 800 emails, I don’t have the mental energy to answer all the IG messages, but every word I have read has touched my heart, the vindication is lovely. Have a wonderful weekend and stay hydrated 😁 . Btw, I’m not single, stop asking. . #sustainablefashion #regency #dandy #firstempireproblems #napoleonic #georgian #historicalfashion #tailor #tailored #periodtailoring #gaystagram #mensfashion #tailoring #regencyfashion #smallbusiness #madeinengland #regencydandy #periodtailor #historicalclothing #tailormade #periodfashion #bespoke #tophat #malemodel #historicaltailoring

This is my reaction looking at my phone the past two days. I’m also doing to answer a few questions. . If you’re serious about ordering something, please email. . The bespoke process requires several personal meetings for fittings. . I will put out information when I plan on doing an international trunk show. . I don’t make hats or shoes, I can point you in the right direction, but well made takes time. . No, I’m not hot in this . Probably best to order clothes for an adult as kids grow quickly. . I make for all people. . I only use historically accurate fabrics and designs, it’s clothing, not costume. . I’m still not single, stop asking. . #regency #dandy #firstempireproblems #napoleonic #georgian #historicalfashion #tailor #tailored #periodtailoring #gaystagram #mensfashion #tailoring #regencyfashion #smallbusiness #madeinengland #regencydandy #periodtailor #historicalclothing #tailormade #periodfashion #bespoke #tophat #malemodel #historicaltailoring

Hello everyone. Firstly I would like to thank everyone for being so kind and supportive, it’s very touching. I’ve always believed in just doing your own thing. One thing I’m big on is #sustainablefashion as I use 100% natural fibres sources in the UK and Europe, no man made plastics here. I shall answer some of your main questions. . Yes I really do wear this type of thing everyday, but have various different outfits. . I make both men and women’s clothing and have made Male clothing for women. . No, I’m not single, stop asking. . The mannequin’s name is Wilhelm, he’s very helpful and friendly. . No, I don’t make hats or shoes. . Bespoke takes a long time, I’m full pretty much until the end of the year. . No, I don’t hire things out. . Yes, I do make for overseas clients. . If you like a garment you can order it! . #regency #dandy #firstempireproblems #napoleonic #georgian #historicalfashion #tailor #tailored #periodtailoring #gaystagram #mensfashion #tailoring #regencyfashion #smallbusiness #madeinengland #regencydandy #periodtailor #historicalclothing #tailormade #periodfashion #bespoke #tophat #malemodel #historicaltailoring

Outerwear . Day 10 of #gentlemanswardrobe is outerwear. This consists of #cloaks , #wool Garrick coats and really any garment worn over a #frockcoat or #tailcoat. These serve the same function as today, keeping someone warm and protected from the weather. On the right you have a caped greatcoat sometimes called a Garrick coat, Coachmans coat or travelling coat. On the left you have a military inspired fully vintage fur lined coat from green wool with gold braid and toggles. Useful and practical garments that could work even with modern clothing. . Would you take the plunge and add this to your Winter wardrobe? #regency #dandy #firstempireproblems #napoleonic #georgian #historicalfashion #tailor #tailored #periodtailoring #gaystagram #mensfashion #tailoring #regencyfashion #smallbusiness #madeinengland #regencydandy #periodtailor #historicalclothing #tailormade #periodfashion #bespoke #tophat #malemodel #historicaltailoring

Frockcoat . Day 9 of #gentlemanswardrobe is the Frockcoat. The #frockcoat was an alternative to the #tailcoat in the late #18thcentury and throughout the #19thcentury. Both of these examples show military styling in terms of braid, the one on the right being civilian with #military inspiration the one on the left being a military undress frockcoat. You do of course have the option of plain and these were often worn, not just in #wool, but #cotton and #linen too. . Interested in a frockcoat to wear over your #waistcoat? . #regency #dandy #firstempireproblems #napoleonic #georgian #historicalfashion #periodtailoring #gaystagram #mensfashion #tailoring #regencyfashion #madeinengland #regencydandy #periodtailor #historicalclothing #tailormade #periodfashion #bespoke #tophat #historicaltailoring

Shoes . Day 7 of #gentlemanswardrobe is shoes. Shoes can come in several styles from court shoes, opera pumps, Wellington boots, cavalry boots, top #boots, hessian boots and mules, to name but a few. Men’s #shoes came in a variety of colours from red, purple and yellow #leather hessians to boots covered in brocade silk. Top boots and hessians were worn by the fashionable #gentleman for walking and #riding and the shorter pump shoes for general and formal wear with either a ribbon or buckle. I’ve gathered shoes from Andy Burk, @burnleyandtrowbridge, @creationjeangaborit and soon from @americanduchess (very excited about these). . Everyone has a favourite pair of shoes, what’s yours? . #regency #dandy #firstempireproblems #napoleonic #georgian #historicalfashion #tailor #tailored #periodtailoring #gaystagram #mensfashion #tailoring #regencyfashion #smallbusiness #madeinengland #regencydandy #periodtailor #historicalclothing #tailormade #periodfashion #bespoke #tophat #malemodel #historicaltailoring

Neckwear . Day 5 of #gentlemanswardrobe is neckwear, made from #linen #cotton and sometimes #silk. There are over 80 ways of tying a #cravat and I intend to master them all, I’ll make tutorials soon. The other option to a hand tied cravat is a stock fastened with a buckle, which was far more common in the #18thcentury but is still used in the #19thcentury especially for military ensemble of the #regency period. . Interested in me doing some YouTube videos detailing how cravats are worn and tied? #dandy #firstempireproblems #napoleonic #georgian #historicalfashion #tailor #tailored #periodtailoring #gaystagram #mensfashion #tailoring #regencyfashion #smallbusiness #madeinengland #regencydandy #periodtailor #historicalclothing #tailormade #periodfashion #bespoke #tophat #historicaltailoring

Demonstrating the differences between #18thcentury and #19thcentury men’s #historicalfashion at @theschoolofhistoricaldress1 this weekend as guest tutor, heavy wools, not bad for the hottest day of the year! . Wearing a #silk late #Georgian evening ensemble with #embroidered #waistcoat, #linen neck stock, cut steel decoration and grey #wig. Also wearing a dark blue #wool #regency #tailcoat with red wool waistcoat, corduroy #breeches, hessian boots, bicorn hat and yellow cravat from @burnleyandtrowbridge. . Happy to say as it’s #worldenvironmentday (which it is everyday) that everything I’m wearing and all my work is #sustainablefashion using natural fibres from the UK and Europe. 📸 by @bernadettebanner #dandy #firstempireproblems #napoleonic #tailored #periodtailoring #tailoring #regencyfashion #madeinengland #regencydandy #periodtailor #historicalclothing #periodfashion #bespoke #historicaltailoring

Breeches . Day 4 of a #gentlemanswardrobe is #breeches these were worn by men throughout the #18thcentury and into the #19thcentury and are still worn for ceremonial, clerical, legal and riding wear. Breeches have been made from many fabrics over time, from #silk #wool #linen #cotton and #leather in a variety of methods from plain weaves to even knit fabrics. Breeches in the #georgian period were often fastened with buckles at the knee but replaced by ties in the #regency period. . What your dream breeches material? . #dandy #firstempireproblems #napoleonic #historicalfashion #tailor #tailored #periodtailoring #mensfashion #tailoring #regencyfashion #madeinengland #regencydandy #periodtailor #historicalclothing #tailormade #periodfashion #bespoke #historicaltailoring

Shirts . Day3 of a #gentlemanswardrobe we have a #linen shirt. There is nothing better than putting on a crisp linen shirt first thing in the morning, truly a lovely feeling. The construction of a shirt remains pretty much unchanged as it’s formed of squares and triangles and using the full width of the fabric. The only great changes from the #18thcentury to the #regency would be the heights of collars, lengths of cuffs and amounts of frills added. Through most of history #shirts, as all underwear was made from linen, it’s not until the latter part of the #19thcentury that we see cotton overtaking linen due to production costs. . Do you have any linen shirts? . #dandy #firstempireproblems #napoleonic #georgian #historicalfashion #tailor #tailored #periodtailoring #gaystagram #mensfashion #tailoring #regencyfashion #smallbusiness #madeinengland #regencydandy #periodtailor #historicalclothing #tailormade #periodfashion #bespoke #tophat #malemodel #historicaltailoring

Stockings . Day 2 of a #gentlemanswardrobe we move onto #stockings the necessary covering of the lower legs for men and women made from frame-knit cloth or circular knitting from the 16th century, before then being made from woven cloth. Stocking of the period were often made from #wool or #silk of varying thicknesses and weights with a great variety of colours and patterns with decorative weaving or embroidery at the joining of the sole and leg adding strength and decoration called clocking. Stocking were kept up with woven ties, garters and the ties of #breeches and #pantaloons, but this often led to leg ulcers. The three on the right are made by me from a modern woven knit fabric with elastic at the top, I don’t fancy getting leg ulcers and the red hand embroidered pair by @pennyrivercostumes with another silk pair on order from @sallypointer. . Have you had a chance to wear fancy patterned stockings? . #regency #dandy #firstempireproblems #napoleonic #georgian #historicalfashion #tailor #tailored #periodtailoring #gaystagram #mensfashion #tailoring #regencyfashion #smallbusiness #madeinengland #regencydandy #periodtailor #historicalclothing #tailormade #periodfashion #bespoke #tophat #malemodel #historicaltailoring

Drinking . The theme of fabric has drawn to a close today, and it’s a bank holiday, so I shall post photos of drinking, as it’s very important to take time off occasionally to prevent burnout and rest sufficiently to do your best work. However, next week I shall be starting to post on the various components of a gentleman’s wardrobe and all the layers involved, so stay tuned.
