Max Hay Uses Blender and Atmospheric Lighting to Turn Complex 3D Assemblies Into Cinematic Sci-Fi Worlds

Max Hay, a Vancouver-area Canadian 3D artist and environment designer recognized for cinematic, moody sci-fi, cyberpunk, and fantasy worlds made in Blender. His work is defined by towering scale, thick atmospheric volumetric fog, industrial decay, and glowing focal points that turn intricate 3D assemblies into expansive visual stories.

Hay’s artwork focuses on immersive environment design: multi-tiered cyberpunk streets crowded with tangled cables, ancient stone ruins reclaimed by dense nature, cavernous industrial complexes, and monolithic sci-fi megastructures. Rather than modeling every element from scratch for each scene, he uses modular workflows, instancing, and Geometry Nodes generators to build massive, highly detailed compositions quickly.

Atmosphere is the core expressive tool in his scenes. Heavy mist, directional spotlights, harsh neon contrast, wet reflective pavement, and floating particulate overlays give his renders an immediate cinematic mood reminiscent of film concept frames.
