Zdzisław Beksiński was an incredibly talented Polish artist who depicted bleak and depressing, sci-fi scenes. Sadly, his life was cut short by a tragic murder. Here we examine some of his best work and recount his tale of woe. He eventually found an interest in sculpture, then photography and later painting. Those that knew him reported him to be a kind, humorous and well measured man who took little interest in over analyzing his own work. Beksiński’s pictures look ultra creepy and bleak to the extreme, but he himself actually found them amusing, he saw them as hopeful rather than apocalyptic. Continue reading »

Women Selling Booze: The Ladies Of Vintage Alcohol Advertising

Allow me to boil down the entire marketing strategy for nearly every alcoholic beverage company in the 1960s-1980s: Babes Sell Booze. Whether it was beer or tequila, the selling tactic of choice was almost always this: have a hot model in the advertisement – end of story. This sex-sells strategy continues to this day, but there was something special about the simplicity of the approach and the sheer number of times it was used in decades past that makes these old advertisements so wonderfully interesting to look at today. Everything started when an education blog mistakenly shared Aja’s painting of the Eiffel Tower as Van Gogh’s.
