Entries of the Scottish Seabird Centre’s Nature Photography Awards
The Scottish Seabird Centre is a visitor attraction in North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland. Opened by Charles, Prince of Wales in 2000 and funded by the Millennium Commission, the showpiece of the centre is the network of cameras which beam back live pictures from the bird colonies on islands such as the Bass Rock and Fidra. The local abundance of gannets, puffins and more has been described by Sir David Attenborough as one of the “Twelve Wildlife Wonders of the World”.

The Human Predators: Innovative Camo Patterns Inspired by Nature
A hunter has created a new range of camouflage gear which is so effective the wearer blends perfectly into the scenery, just like a real-life Predator from the Hollywood films. In terrifying news for unsuspecting fauna, American company Realtree has launched the latest in a line of state-of-the-art clothing which enables hunters to blend seamlessly into their surroundings. “Morning Frolics!” This Fox family had their den just down the way a bit from my cabin. On this particular day, everyone was out enjoying an early morning romp. There is action everywhere here!! One kit leaps an another is busy sneaking up on him. There were so many things happening, it was hard to keep up with it all. And, two of the kits didn’t even get in this image! “Fox Glance”. During a regular trip through the forest, of which my actual intent was landscapes, I encountered this stunning little Red Fox. The moment came as the light broke through the clouds and trees, he turned with a glance of curiosity and gave me the unusual composition I was after. 7th Annual Focus on Nature Photo Contest Winners
The Palm Beach Post, and its multimedia site CLIK/HEAR, are honored to present the winners of the 7th Annual Focus on Nature Photo Contest. More than 1,600 entries were received during the contest’s 3-week period. They were judged by educator and award-winning nature photographer John J. Lopinot, and Jennifer Podis, Greg Lovett and Joe Forzano of the Post’s Multimedia Department.
GRAND PRIZE. “Attempted Escape Grassy Waters,” by STEVEN SCHERER. “The image was taken at Grassy Waters Preserve in West Palm Beach, with a Nikon D300 and Nikon 70-300mm lens. There were three baby gators right by the dock, then I saw an adult floating toward them. The adult grabbed a baby, went under water and I started shooting. Suddenly it came up and this was one of the images. Like many things it was just being at the right place at the right time.” Continue reading »

Wetsuits are both functional and protective, but why must they all look the same? Is there some unwritten law that dictates we shed our individuality to blend into the monotone waters? Not to challenge Mother Nature’s art direction but it’s high time for a change.
Ernst Haeckel “Artforms of Nature”
Graphic designer? Illustrator? Did you hear about Ernst Haeckel’s “Artforms of Nature”?
Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckel (1834 – 1919) also written von Haeckel, was an eminent German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor and artist who discovered, described and named thousands of new species, mapped a genealogical tree relating all life forms, and coined many terms in biology.
