“Surfboards and Skeletons”: The Beachside Whimsy and Existential Humor in Illustrations of Kentaro Yoshida

Kentaro Yoshida is a Japanese-born illustrator and visual artist based in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, celebrated for his quirky, pastel-toned designs that fuse surf culture, humor, and a distinctly Japanese sensibility.

Born in Toyama, Japan, Yoshida moved to Australia at 18 to study English and design, eventually earning a degree in Visual Communication from the University of Technology Sydney. His art is defined by strong linework, soft color palettes, and surreal compositions often populated by skeletons, waves, and sun-soaked characters that marry existential reflection with coastal nostalgia.

Yoshida’s portfolio spans murals, paintings, and digital projects created for brands such as Seiko, BMW Motorrad, Levi’s, Billabong, Blink‑182, Converse, and Apple, along with personal series showcased in solo and group exhibitions worldwide. His influences draw heavily from manga, traditional Japanese art, and everyday Australian life, blending both cultures into a playful, often ironic visual storytelling language.
