Photographer Captures American Apparel Ads in their Gritty Natural Environment

One of the most ubiquitous sights in Los Angeles is the American Apparel billboard. They are mostly small signs, found in strategic neighborhoods such as Silverlake and Echo Park and featuring a young, attractive women in Dov Charney’s products. The billboards reflect a vintage softcore aesthetic that make the ads nearly unmissable.
Los Angeles-based artist Thomas Alleman set out to capture these tiny billboards in their natural environment. The end result is “The American Apparel,” a gritty look at the role these ads play in the streets of Los Angeles. There are billboards overlooking homeless squats, perching over a street corner, hiding behind buildings and looking down on alleyways.

The Biggest Christmas Tree in the World

The biggest Christmas tree in the world is the one in Gubbio, Italy – a magical sight that will get anyone in the holiday spirit.
In 1981 the residents of the town in Umbria decided to take matters into their own hands. They set up a single tree that the whole town could enjoy. Ten years later, their tree – resting on the side of Mount Ingino – set the Guinness world record with its 450-meter base, 750 meters of height, and 130,000-square-meter surface (equivalent to thirty soccer fields). The tree is made of almost one thousand lights, wired to about eight kilometers of electrical cables. It lights up on the evening of December 7, the eve of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and is left on until January 6, day of the Epiphany. Continue reading »

Drone Survival Guide

Our ancestors could spot natural predators from far by their silhouettes. Are we equally aware of the predators in the present-day? Drones are remote-controlled planes that can be used for anything from surveillance and deadly force, to rescue operations and scientific research. Most drones are used today by military powers for remote-controlled surveillance and attack, and their numbers are growing. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) predicted in 2012 that within 20 years there could be as many as 30.000 drones flying over U.S. Soil alone. As robotic birds will become commonplace in the near future, we should be prepared to identify them. This survival guide is an attempt to familiarise ourselves and future generations, with a changing technological environment.
This document contains the silhouettes of the most common drone species used today and in the near future. Each indicating nationality and whether they are used for surveillance only or for deadly force. All drones are drawn in scale for size indication. From the smallest consumer drones measuring less than 1 meter, up to the Global Hawk measuring 39,9 meter in length.

Wildfox Couture: “Gatsby Stole My Heart” Lookbook

Just after the release of a certain obscure Australian art film comes Wildfox Couture‘s Great Gatsby-inspired fall lookbook. The clothes are decadent, the atmosphere is trippy, and the styling is mercifully non-literal about its 1920s roots (there are few of us who can pull off the head-to-toe flapper thing without looking costume, or even want to). The only thing that’s missing is a t-shirt printed with the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg. Continue reading »
Rough Sketches Come to Life as Furniture by Daigo Fukawa

Usually it takes a long way for a sketch to be turned into an actual product. Japanese designer Daigo Fukawa just might change all that, however, with his series of furniture called “Rough Sketch Products” that look like they’ve just been transferred directly from his sketchbook to reality. The project was submitted as Fukuhawa’s senior thesis exhibition at Tokyo University of the Arts.
Made from cleverly arranged wire and photographed with a perfectly blank background, his various benches and chairs trick our perception of dimensions. Suddenly, 2D meets 3D, and the people sitting on these unique scribbled creations seem to be levitating in the air. It might not be the comfiest furniture out there, but it will definitely put a smile on your face.
