Haunting Photos Of A Deserted Mall That Is Now Covered In Snow
Photographic displays of “haunting decay” have become so banalized as to sometimes evoke more eye-rolls than chills. But photographer Seph Lawless has, through his politically charged depictions of American vacancies, restored novelty to imagery of the old and dilapidated: images from his 2014 book, Black Friday, were widely circulated last year. The title, based on a tradition that unfortunately hasn’t lost its relevance in American culture, was juxtaposed with photos of abonded structures central to this “holiday”: malls.

Stinger in the sun by Carlos Perez Naval (Spain)
Aware of Carlos’s presence, the common yellow scorpion is flourishing its sting as a warning. Carlos had found it basking on a flat stone in a rocky area near his home in Torralba de los Sisones, northeast Spain — also a place that he goes to look for reptiles. The late afternoon sun was casting such a lovely glow over the scene that Carlos decided to experiment with a double exposure (his first ever) so he could include the sun. He started with the background, using a fast speed so as not to overexpose the sun, and then shot the scorpion, using a low flash. But he had to change lenses (he used his zoom for the sun), which is when the scorpion noticed the movement and raised its tail. Carlos then had to wait for it to settle before taking his close-up, with the last rays of the sun lighting up its body.

Rare Photos of Angola’s Tribal People
Photographer Eric Lafforgue travelled to Angola and met some of the fascinating tribal peoples living there.
Men, by contrast, leave jewellery and elaborate hairstyles to the women, instead choosing to wear a simple loin cloth paired with a dagger or, in some cases, old 1990s football jerseys. The jerseys are a symbol of changing times in Angola; a country where huge oil wealth is concentrated in the hands of a privileged few while the rest of the country struggles to come to terms with the aftermath of the Angolan Civil War – a conflict that lasted for more than 30 years and left the countryside littered with landmines.

The probe, carrying a rover dubbed Jade Rabbit that will survey the moon’s geology and natural resources, landed at about 9 pm Beijing on Saturday, the Xinhua News Agency said. China’s achievement comes 47 years after the Soviet Union performed a soft landing of its Luna 9 spacecraft on the moon.
The launch is part of the Asian nation’s growing space exploration ambitions, an effort which has seen the country spend billions of dollars even as other nations cut back. For its next step, China wants to land a lunar rover and return it to Earth in 2017, according to Xinhua. Continue reading »

Unseen Photos of the 1965 Rolling Stones
An exhibition at Los Angeles’ Dilettante gallery showcased 23 rare photographs capturing candid moments of the Rolling Stones on their 1965 American tour. Shot in Savannah, Ga., and Clearwater, Fla., in the spring of 1965, the pictures show the now legendary rock group in their youth, relaxing as the British Invasion of rock swept the States. The collection shows the carefree innocence of the Stones, along with their founding member and road manager Ian Stewart, just when they were on the verge of superstardom. Continue reading »
