Pavel Pletnev Turns Everyday Urban Decay Into Miniature Worlds Worth Looking at Twice

Pavel Pletnev turns the overlooked details of everyday urban life into miniature worlds. Originally from Omsk and now working in Saint Petersburg, the artist creates objects and installations that draw on the worn, improvised environments of contemporary Russia. His childhood fascination with model-making has become a way of examining the city at a different scale.

Pletnev’s miniature works invite viewers to reconsider surroundings they might otherwise ignore. Reduced in size, familiar urban structures become objects of close inspection rather than background scenery. His “worlds in jars” take that idea further, enclosing fragments of an imagined environment inside glass containers — somewhere between a preserved specimen, a souvenir, and a tiny stage set.

His own description of the practice — “glorification of the chthonic, deconstruction of aesthetics, appropriation of memes” — suggests an approach that is both affectionate and irreverent. The bleak and ungainly are not edited out to make the city more attractive; they become the material through which its character emerges.
