10 Car Crash Survivors Pose Proudly For A Chilling Photo Project To Raise Awareness About Seatbelt Safety

Shocking portraits of the searing bruises that seatbelts can leave behind after a crash are being celebrated as survival badges of honor, and showing the importance of belting up.
The initiative is part of an NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) campaign to reduce the number of deaths on NZ roads. According to them, 90 people die each year because they weren’t wearing their seatbelt, most of whom are young men in rural areas. The confronting portraits are of 10 real-life crash survivors, whose post-crash injuries were recreated by the SFX make-up company PROFX. Continue reading »

According to Joe Doucet: “A good number of projects begin as internal experiments in the studio. Minim is one such project. Invited to a friend’s poker night, it occurred to me while looking a the cards that there was a great deal of historical baggage and useless information in a contemporary deck of playing cards such as the repetition of the number and suit on the face of the cards. For example: How many times do you count the ten spades laid out in the center of the card vs just reading the number 10 and the spade in the upper left hand corner? Why do cards have an orientation at all when all of the pertinent information is contained in a small portion of the cards visible when fanned out? Then there’s the Medieval reference to a royal hierarchy. It seemed to me that playing cards were a great vehicle for an experiment in reduction. Continue reading »

National Geographic has made a name for themselves with their earth-shattering photographs, so it was no surprise that they made Instagram history as the first brand to reach 100 million followers (those are almost Kim Kardashian numbers). To celebrate in true Nat Geo fashion, they opened up a photography contest across the photo-sharing platform – using the hashtag #natgeo100contest. In the 24-hour contest window, the magazine received more than 94,000 photograph submissions. The photo editors and photographers at Nat Geo went through the entries and narrowed them down to the top 10 most stunning images and then let their 10 million followers vote on who would be the grand prize winner. Below you can view the contest winning photo, the top finalists along with some other gorgeous entries that didn’t make the cut but are still just as mind-blowing.

On October 16, Nasa published a photo of a perfectly squared iceberg. The picture quickly went viral, coupled with a few conspiracy theories qualifying this as the work of aliens. However, the phenomenon is rather common according to the scientists. Tabular icebergs are parts of large blocks of ice which are connected to the land. One day, just “like a fingernail growing too long and cracking off the end”, they explain, they split from the edge of the block, following the pattern of the ice cracks.
